ARE FACIALS A NECESSITY OR A LUXURY?

Is Self Care a necessity or a luxury?

I have heard many times a client say "I can't tell my husband I got a facial because it's such a luxury". That's when I try my best (while using my broken English and my Brazilian accent) to explain two very important points about facials and why you should feel good about investing your time in getting one.

MY FIRTS POINT:

Even though facials can feel luxurious, specially when you go to a nice space and you get an outstanding facial (according to my clients they feel like being in heaven afterwards - not trying to brag about the facials at my studio - but if you are a newbie you can picture how it feels) I am here to tell you that facials are a lot more than just pampering your skin with yummy scented creams.

Not only facials are designed to help improve the appearance of the skin, which in the long term it will keep you physically healthy, getting a facial has a huge impact on mental health as well.

I know I am gonna sound like an old radio station announcing outdated news, but I can't emphasise enough that self-care is extremely important for well-being. Engaging in a self-care routine has been clinically proven to eliminate anxiety, lower depression and over all increase happiness. Benefiting peeps from all ages.

We women have a tendency to always feel guilty when we take time away from our duties, whether is being a mom, a homemaker, a provider, a business figure or all at once (I fall into the "all at once" category..it's honestly overwhelming at times so I definitely need a facial).

Skincare, regardless if is from getting a facial done or doing yourself at home, can give you a well-deserved serotonin boost, a hormone that makes us happy. That alone is a good reason to sign me up!

Did you know that a single facial treatment have the power to reduce stress and lower inflammation in the body? Basically, when we lower stress and tension, we are creating a better quality of life. We are also lowering the chances of having skin conditions that are induced by stress, such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and premature aging.

To make you understand a tad better the impact facials have on us, here is an event I experienced when I was working in Switzerland. A client came in and I immediately noticed she was passing through a difficult time and perhaps grieving a loss. She looked dull, like she had no life in her. I remember she cried on and off while getting a facial and at one point I wasn't even sure she was enjoying it.

I asked her to take a deep breath in, let go all her pain and focus her mind into something positive for herself. I could tell she started to relax, tears had stopped, her face wasn't as tense anymore, and her skin was reacting really well to the treatment. I nourished her skin back to balanced, and I used lots of cryotherapy (cold temperature tools) around her eyes so she wouldn't look puffy. After all, she had cried quite a bit.

In the end, her skin looked amazing, and taking the time off to come in was a great step and also a self reminder of her worth. When she left, I gave her a big hug, wished her well and I pointed out how important self-care is, in any form. I was so proud of her, because it takes effort to be strong and centred.

A month had passed, I saw her again and she looked fully charged. Allocating an hour once in a while, to relax, to nourish her skin (which by the way, is the largest organ we have) and allowing someone to care for her, was a way she found to being her self confident again.

Self care can help you adapt to changes, build strong relationships, and recover from setbacks.

With that in mind, can a facial be a mere luxury? Some people like to believe so, but to me a facial is an important part of health care. It's essential for well being.

When we feel good, our skin immediately radiates, which brings me to my SECOND POINT. Is it really possible you can slip away unnoticed that you just got a facial? You can definitely give it a try but I personally think your partner and loved ones will notice :)

Yours truly,

Milene
